The virtual K-8 Academy at McKinley School in Manitowoc is being dissolved after all.
Manitowoc Public School Board President Stacey Soeldner told the board last night (December 12th) that the McKinley School Board voted to modify the contract to end the K-8 virtual program as of July 1st.
She says data gathered by staff show that students and families have other options they’ve been exploring.
“The councilor and the principal (at McKinley) went ahead and did that and contacted the families that they could,” she explained. “A lot of the students were eighth grade who will move onto Lincoln or will stay in the 9-12 program.”
Soeldner says students are also making arrangements to do other virtual programs if that’s how they learn best.
The next step the district is going to take is regarding virtual programming for students and whether they should get involved.
The board did take a vote to modify the contract with McKinley for reduced enrollment with unanimous support.
Another future discussion the board will have been is whether McKinley will stay as a charter school in the future.
The board has wanted to dissolve the program because it’s been costing the district more than $600,000 a year while only about 21 students are enrolled in it.
