Jay Wolowicz was the Head Coach of The Manitowoc Lincoln Girls Basketball Team 30 years ago when the Ships advanced to the state tournament in Madison.
He tells Seehafer News, “It doesn’t seem that long ago. I was just thinking about that this past week. It doesn’t seem like it’s been 30 years, but it has been a long time.”
That 1993-94 team will be honored during a halftime ceremony of tonight’s game between the Ships and De Pere Redbirds at The JFK Fieldhouse.
Wolowicz says it was a great group of girls to coach.
“We didn’t have to worry about getting them fired up for the games or practices,” he explained. “They just enjoyed working hard. Even before that year, they thought they could win, and it worked out well for them. I just enjoyed the fact that they loved to work hard.”
They were the second girls’ team at LHS to advance to state.
The Ships were conference, regional, and sectional champions, with their season coming to an end at the hands of eventual state runner-up La Crosse Central.
The Lady Ships ended the season with a record of 23 and 2. Wolowicz says they’ve stayed in touch with each other over the years.
“We’ve been staying in touch on Facebook and via text messages,” he explained. “I see some of the girls during the summer and even taught some of their children in school. We make it a point to keep in touch.”
He adds that playing in Madison was special.
“Going down to Madison is always a good thing to talk about, catching up about what’s going on in their lives,” he said. “It’s just good to always catch up with them.”
