The next executive director for the Woodland Dunes Nature Preserve in Two Rivers is gearing up to assume her new role.
Sue Crowley will be taking over for Jim Knickelbien who is set to retire at the end of the year.
Crowley said on WOMT’s Be My Guest that she was a Wisconsin DNR forester for Manitowoc County and has been their land manager with Woodland Dunes for the last two years.
When asked if she was expecting this to happen, she responded with a smile and a chuckle, “It wasn’t in any kind of plan, that’s for sure.”
Knickelbien is retiring after working for the organization for 32 years, 30 as its executive director.
He says he wants to take care of the land he lives on while also getting out camping and playing some music when he can.
He says it’s been a pleasure to work with all the staff at the nature preserve, and he knows it’s in good hands.
Before he leaves, Knicklebien says people need to be careful about protecting what’s here.
“I know Sue is going to do a great job at Woodland Dunes,” he said.
His parting words included, “Encouraging everyone else to do things like plant trees and plant native wildflowers and things like that.”
Woodland Dunes is celebrating 50 years in 2024 and will have numerous events coming up to recognize that.
