Salt is a staple throughout Wisconsin’s icy winters, but it can come at a cost.
The City of Manitowoc in coalition with the Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance is asking residents to “salt smart” this winter.
It only takes 1 teaspoon of salt to pollute 5 gallons of water to a toxic level in our lakes, streams, and groundwater.
Through Wisconsin Salt Wise, residents can learn about the full effects of salt pollution on water.
From January 22-26, the group is hosting daily livestreams from 12:30-1 on their YouTube page.
Oversalting is also damaging to infrastructure.
Repairs to salt-damaged infrastructure total over $5 billion annually.
It can also pose serious health risks to pets who interact with too much of it.
