For many homeowners, school district taxes went up the most on property tax bills.
Manitowoc School District Superintendent Jim Feil said on WOMT’s Be My Guest that the referendum caused the increase, but it was one of the lowest referendums in the area.
But also, at the state level, there was some previous property tax relief for homeowners but not for school districts.
So, taxes did go up, but it’s for two reasons. The first thing he says is if your home assessment goes up, your taxes most likely would have gone up.
The other reason Feil explained is because “Manitowoc Public Schools was trying to reposition itself making up for some of the loss in revenues that we’ve received from the prior years that made us really low. So, we were putting ourselves back into a position and now we’re in the middle of the pack.
The Valders School District had the highest tax increase with $7.26 per $1,000 in property value, Two Rivers was $6.79, and Manitowoc was $6.65 per $1,000.
Mishicot and Reedsville were a little lower with $6.54 and $6.51.
Feil says anyone with questions can talk to the district’s business manager, Angela Erdmann by calling 920-663-9373.
