As frosted temperatures hit the Lakeshore this weekend, Manitowoc Public Utilities (MPU) offers a few tips to prevent frozen water pipes.
First, MPU recommends keeping heat in basements, crawl spaces, utility closets, and under sinks.
They say to open interior doors to allow heat to circulate in these areas.
Next, if one uses heat tapes in trailer homes or homes without basements, make sure they are plugged in and functional.
MPU also recommends insulating basement sill boxes and other areas where water pipes are located.
Next, exterior faucets should have a separate shut-off valve, and be sure that the inside valve is ‘off.’
Finally, MPU encourages homeowners and renters to locate the main water shut-off so that if there is a problem, they are prepared.
When the weather warms again, MPU concludes to still be on the lookout for leaks as frozen pipes begin to thaw.
