A workout at the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA on Friday (January 19th) might have included walking out of the building.
An announcement from the Y says they needed to evacuate the building immediately yesterday morning after a mechanical issue at the pool.
Firefighters had detected a chemical situation that had the potential to cause a serious safety risk, so an evacuation was ordered.
CEO Julie Grossman says, unfortunately, some people told staff they didn’t need to leave when asked to because “the building is made of steel and concrete” and other reasons suggesting the building is fireproof.
She’s asking anyone who’s at the Y in the future to evacuate when asked, knowing that the decision to do it is not made lightly.
Because of this situation, the instructional pool will remain closed until further notice.
The main pool is still open.
Grossman didn’t say specifically what the chemical situation was or what risks it posed.
The main pool is open per usual operating hours, but the instructional pool remains closed until further notice.
