An eastern Wisconsin congressman was disappointed in Republican leadership for not doing more at the US-Mexico border when it came to stopping a recent government shutdown.
Sixth District Congressman Glenn Grothman, who represents Manitowoc County in Washington, says, “The Biden Administration wants to keep the government open to extract some promises on the border.”
He also claims that more immigrants are crossing the border than ever before when the president took office.
He says he wishes his counterparts would have been bolder in fixing the issues at the border before funding the government.
If anything could be fixed, Grothman says he wishes President Biden would reintroduce the Remain in Mexico policy, which stopped people from crossing the border to having a court hearing on whether they would be allowed in the US.
“If Joe Biden would just say, you have to stay in Mexico waiting for the hearing, this would shut down things a lot,” he explained. “A lot of these people paid a lot of money to come here. If you paid say $40,000 in India to come here, you’re not going to come here if you have to spend three years waiting for a hearing and you don’t know if you’re going to succeed in your hearing or not.”
He says the border problem could be reduced by 85% if the policy were reintroduced.
Former President Donald Trump created the policy in 2019 to try to deter people from entering the US.
