A large crowd of Reedsville High School students packed the Mishicot High School gym to watch a Reedsville high school basketball player reach a milestone.
Senior Forward Mallory Novy scored 1,000 career points after shooting several free throws throughout the game.
Head coach Darrel Hanson calls Mallory a great athlete on both sides of the court, and she’s been amazing to work with as her first-year head coach.
“You couldn’t ask for a better kid to walk in in your first year of coaching at a school,” he said. “She’s just an outstanding person as well as a basketball player.”
Mallory tells Seehafer Sports that she felt nervous trying to score her 1000th point playing against the Indians but felt better once she got it.
She also says she had to work hard to reach her 1000-year goal during her career and is very proud that she pushed herself.
“I barely played my freshmen year because I was on JV, although I did for varsity too but not very often,” she expressed. “And then my sophomore year I got hurt so I barley played my sophomore year and then I finally came back, and I pushed myself to get to my goal.”
Her mother, Sheila Novy says her daughter’s accomplishment is unbelievable.
“She’s worked very hard,” she described. “And she’s had some rough times, so to see her pull through like this and do that and see the all the people here to cheer her on means the world.”
Unfortunately, the thousand-point milestone did come with a loss to the Mishicot Indians as the Panthers fell 61 to 51.
Mallory finished the game with 11 total points, which puts her career number at 1,006, making her one of only three Panther girls to achieve that milestone.
Angie Geiger reached 1,002 points during her career, which spanned 1992 through 1994, and Heidi Behnke currently leads the all time scorers list with 1,495 points through her career, which spanned 1994 through 1997.
Coach Hanson says he wishes he could’ve won the game but is still happy with what Mallory accomplished because it couldn’t have happened to a better kid.
