The City of Manitowoc encourages residents to responsibly use fertilizers and herbicides on and around their yards.
Director of Public Infrastructure Dan Koski says many people are “highly sensitive” to lawn chemicals and pesticide use is regulated by the State and Federal Government.
Koski adds that chemicals and weed killers are not needed for a healthy lawn and are one of the main causes of green algae in lakes and streams.
Citizens are asked to get a soil test to know if their lawn needs more nutrients.
Mulch is highly effective as it successfully out-competes weeds for light, nutrients, and water, plus fertilizer can and often does end up in the street and eventually into lakes, rivers, and streams.
If you fertilize, please follow directions on the label, sweep up any that falls into the street and/or sidewalk, and post notices on your lawn so that others are aware and can avoid the area.
