The Manitowoc Lincoln Boys doubles team of senior Ayden Knuth and junior Cohen Newberg lost a heartbreaker to Melvin and Edwin Wu of Homestead in a Division One consolation bracket match at The WIAA State Boys Individual Tennis Tournament Saturday in Madison.
The Ships won the first set 7-6 (7-5), lost the second set 4-6, and fell 8-10 in a third-set tiebreak to put an end to a fabulous season.
Cohen and Ayden made their third consecutive trip to Madison, earning the third seed in the draw based on their outstanding season before the state tournament.
They finish their season with a record of 31 and 3, and Knuth put a wrap on an outstanding season and career representing Lincoln High School.
Head Coach Bob Feller called these boys “two of the most outstanding, not only players but young men. that I’ve had the privilege to coach at Lincoln High School.”
With this match, Coach Bob caps a 50-year career at Lincoln School, and he’ll reflect on that and more as he’ll be our special guest on WOMT Sports Talk on Monday, June 10th at 5:30 at The Wharf in downtown Manitowoc.
