The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, and the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin have issued a warning to Wisconsin residents regarding a potential “spoofing” scam.
“Spoofing” involves falsifying caller IDs, email addresses, or other contact information to deceive recipients into believing a fraudulent message.
Reports received by the PSC indicate that small businesses and property owners have been receiving calls that display the official PSC phone number, (1-800) 225-7729.
However, these calls are actually from scammers posing as PSC representatives.
The scammers threaten to disconnect the targets’ utility services and demand immediate payment. DATCP and PSC emphasize that the Public Service Commission does not engage in phone calls threatening utility disconnection, demanding payments over the phone, or requesting personal financial details.
If individuals receive such calls, they are advised to simply terminate the call.
