The U.S.S Cobia will be coming out of the water. But it’s not going to happen right away.
Submarine Curator Karen Duvalle tells Seehafer News that dry docking the submarine is scheduled for September 2025 for routine maintenance.
“It’s a chance to get the boat out of the water and inspect the haul and make sure everything’s good everything’s safe,” Duvalle described. “We’ve done a few underwater inspections but there’s 100% coverage of zebra and quagga muscles.”
Duvalle says the muscles make it hard to see different parts of the submarine and if anything needs to be repaired.
When the sub is taken out of the water, it will be sent to a company in Sturgeon Bay which will clean up and look over the submarine to see how it’s doing.
They will work to remove the zebra and quagga muscles and check the Cobia.
This project, however, isn’t something that can be done through the museum itself.
Duvalle says they are raising $1.2 million for the Cobia to be dry-docked.
“We haven’t hit our goal, but all summer long people can donate online, or they can stop in,” she states. “We have different campaigns going on throughout the year.”
If the campaign is successful, Duvalle says it will be the first time since 1996 that the Cobia will be dry-docked and inspected.
