Neshotah Beach is now home to a brand new, state-of-the-art alert system.
The Two Rivers Parks and Recreation Department says the SwimSmart Beach Alert System supplies real-time updates on water conditions, directly from the National Weather Service via cellular connection.
There are three levels indicated on the alert displays.
Green indicates low hazard and calm conditions.
Yellow indicates a medium hazard and moderate waves and/or low currents, and red means there is a high hazard, high waves, and/or strong currents.
Three alert displays were installed, one at the intersection of Pierce St. and Zlatnik Dr., one along Neshotah Beach, and another at the beach next to the North Pier and Coast Guard Station.
Signs are posted at each one indicating the level of hazard, however if the lights are not on, that doesn’t necessarily mean it is safe to swim.
