Today is Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day.
The commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, specifically the day when 250,000 African Americans were freed in Texas, two years after the official end to slavery.
The day was mostly overlooked until 2021, when it was made an official federal holiday.
Andrew W. Mellon, the Director of the National Museum of African American History & Culture says of the holiday,
“As we continue to celebrate Juneteenth as a federal holiday, we remember and recognize how the Black community continues to make a way out of no way, overcoming trials and celebrating triumphs while honoring the place and price of freedom.”
With today being a Federal Holiday, there will be no mail delivery, no trading at the financial markets, all federal offices are closed, and many banks & credit unions are closed today.
