Manitowoc’s Police Chief is explaining how the department uses grants to help people in the community.
Chief Nick Reimer explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that they get complaints about pedestrian safety, speeding, and OWIs.
So, the department puts in applications for grants aimed at helping those who feel their needs to be more safety and allows officers to focus on those violations that they might not have time to normally get to because they’re busy.
Reimer specifically talked about what police do to help pedestrian safety.
“We’ll look for people who aren’t stopping for people crossing in a crosswalk,” he stated. “We’ll stop them and normally educate them. A lot of times people just aren’t aware of what the law is.”
Recently, Manitowoc Police got a $65,000 speed enforcement grant to pay for overtime for officers who are actively enforcing speeding and other traffic violations.
They are also applying for a bike safety grant to periodically use bikes and crosswalks to educate residents and slow dangerous driving behavior for people biking in the street.
