The next step has been taking in the creation of a new public pool in Two Rivers.
Department Director Mike Mathis gave a presentation during yesterday’s Two Rivers Council Work Session about the Community Pool’s Ad Hoc Committee’s findings for creating the new pool.
Mathis explained that there would need to be a new group to help fundraise to help rebuild a new facility after the Two Rivers Family Swim Center closed at the end of last year.
After the committee is formed, there will be a referendum that could be on the ballot as early as the Spring 2025 election.
If enough money is raised, the facility will be open to the public with daily and seasonal passes plus concessions.
If a new pool would be opened, Mathis explained, “the city of Two Rivers would own the property and the facility with parks and recs department leading the operations.”
Before anything gets started, Mathis explained there would need to be a feasibility study done on the best place to put the pool because the old Family Swim Center might be too small.
“We really need a professional company that does feasibility studies, that does this type of work, to really help us out here,” Mathis continued.
Council members asked several questions about which company could do the best feasibility study to how much the pool could cost all together.
Councilwoman Darla LeClair was concerned about raising taxes and wanted to make sure everyone knew everything.
“Yeah, have the referendum, but be crystal clear with the community that this is how much it costs,” she stated. “And they have to know the details, whether they read it all (the Ad Hoc Committees Report) or not.”
Mathis also explained other options the committee looked at including using the Manitowoc Aquatic Center, YMCA, or Two Rivers High School, but none were able to produce all the needs for what a new pool could bring.
If the council moves forward, the new pool could cost between $5-6 million with an annual budget of about $248,900.
The resolution could be voted on during the council’s next regular meeting, which takes place on July 1st.
