A special proclamation for the city of Manitowoc was celebrated on top of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
Briess Malt and Ingredients held the celebration with 3 local breweries after Manitowoc was officially proclaimed as the Specialty Malt Capital of the World.
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels reread the proclamation, which read in part, “Whereas Briess has helped revive Manitowoc’s proud Maritime history by receiving shipments of barley from Great Lakes cargo ships multiple times per year.”
25th District State Assemblyman Paul Tittl gave Briess a special citation from the Wisconsin Legislature, which read in part, “Whereas Briess upholds a standard of excellence in their products that they produce and offers the largest product line of specialty malts and ingredients of any company in the world.”
After both proclamations, CEO Craig Briess spoke about how a small malt house in Czechoslovakia blossomed into what it’s become today.
He says the commitment to the principles of what Briess Malt does hasn’t changed, which includes the quality of the products they produce and the pride they have in where they produce it.
“Manitowoc has and continues to set the standard for not just American specialty malting and craft brewing but for the entire world,” he stated. “And so, Manitowoc today is acknowledging, and really rightly so, it’s place as the specialty malt capital of the world.”
Briess continued saying by extension, this also makes Manitowoc the specialty craft beer capital of the world because most craft beers in America begin in the Clipper City.
Briess and Director of Marketing Ron Schroder told Seehafer News that the future is bright for the company as they continue to innovate.
“We just introduced two new malts this year, for instance,” says Schroder. “One is called Heritage Gold, that’s a base malt. But then consistent with most of our malts, one of our new specialty malts is called Crystal Red. And that’s a malt that’s highly caramelized, more than are other caramel malts, and adds red and golden colors even at very low levels.”
Craig Briess finished the day off with a toast.
“Cheers, Prost, and Na zdravi.”
PetSkull, Sabbatical, and Craft Creek breweries shared samples of the beers they created with Briess Malt with the group that gathered at the Sub Pub at the Maritime Museum.
Briess acquired the former Anheuser Busch plant about ten years ago after starting with a smaller malt plant in Chilton.
