Gumby’s Club Fore a Cure returns this weekend for the first time since the passing of its namesake.
Gumby’s committee members Randy Heinzen and Rob’s widow Denise Roseff joined WOMT’s Be My Guest program to talk about the upcoming weekend and how Gumby’s Club Fore a Cure began.
“Gumby’s Club Fore a Cure started about 13 years ago when Rob, Gumby, was diagnosed with cancer,” Randy explained. “Rob’s big thing was always helping others. Even though he was facing stage-4 cancer, it was always about what can we do for somebody else?”
Rob passed away on August 31st, 2023, after his cancer returned.
Heinzen, one of the organization’s founders, also said that the number of families dealing with cancer increases every year.
Gumby’s Weekend includes a two-day golf event, a 5K run/walk, a bowling event, and much more throughout Manitowoc County.
Gumby’s Golf will be at the Meadow Links Golf Course starting on Saturday and Sunday (July 13 & 14).
Gumby’s Glow Run/Walk 5K will be on Saturday at dusk at the Lincoln Park Zoo.
Gumby’s Bowling is set to take place at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Meadow Lanes North.
Additionally, on Sunday, there will be a presentation at the golf course with special guests.
“Even if you don’t golf, even if you don’t bowl, or if you don’t want to do the run/walk, come down on Sunday for that noon presentation,” Randy said. “It really explains what Gumby’s Club Fore a Cure is about and why we do what we do.”
The organization is a non-profit with all work being done by volunteers, ensuring 100% of the money raised goes back to this increasing number of families in need of financial support.
