A Democrat from Oshkosh is running to try and unseat Congressman Glenn Grothman.
John Zarbano is a lawyer with many years of practice in several states including Wisconsin and has lived in the Badger State since 1998.
A group of citizens convened at the Manitowoc Public Library to hear his message about why he wants to run, which includes what happened on January 6th, 2021, and when Congressman Grothman voted no to give aid to Ukraine.
He gave a presentation about bills he would support that he says Grothman and Republicans have voted no on.
Topics included healthcare, workers’ rights, and immigration. Zarbano says, unlike Grothman, he would take action regarding the US-Mexico border.
“They had in their hand…the compromise senate bill,” he said. “And Trump said no, we’re not going to do that. We’re just going to cry about the border and blame it on Biden.”
The group asked Zarbano several questions including does he think he can flip the 6th Congressional District, which Grothman has won since he ran for Congress the first time.
He says it can be done because the Republican congressman doesn’t support their values.
“Winnebago (County) is going to stay blue,” he stated. “Columbia (County) is going to stay blue. Fond du Lac (County), I can make that purple by appealing to newly registered voters, and especially women to get those folks to vote.”
Zambrano’s presentation also brought up the topic of how money in some cases at the federal level is used to benefit some and not others.
Zarbano says he would want to create a new tax code that focuses on economic growth and federal programs.
“That’s all that fiscal policy does,” he explained. “That’s all the tax code is supposed to do. It’s not supposed to pick winners and losers and all of that.”
Zarbano does face an uphill battle in the 6th Congressional District, which Grothman has won with at least 50% each time he’s against someone for the seat.
Grothman also held a town hall in April explaining what he wants to continue to do while he’s in Congress.
We’ve reached out to his office for further comment.
