One part of a Two Rivers street will not have parking allowed on it anymore.
The Two Rivers City Council voted to eliminate parking on the east side of Jefferson Street in the 2200 block.
A memorandum from the city explained that there have been ongoing issues with vehicles, especially larger vehicles and trailers, parking on Jefferson Street which made it hard for emergency service vehicles to get through.
Action was taken in a 2019 Public Works Committee meeting but wasn’t looked at again until a July 3rd meeting earlier this month.
One resident on Jefferson St. was concerned about the change.
“I’m just wondering why they want to restrict parking again when we just went over this a couple of years ago actually,” the man said.
Council members, including Adam Wachowski, said they don’t want to take away parking from people.
“I’m just not a big person of taking away parking for the most part,” he stated. “Especially in neighborhoods where there are kids, I mean you got parties and other things that are going to happen at these places, and just taking away parking just seems a bit much.”
Council Member Bill LeClair said this is the best option.
“This is why we’ve reacted this way,” he explained. “It’s the easiest thing to do for right now. Now, we want to get ahead of this thing and stop the problem.”
The council also discussed whether they should just ban trailers attached to vehicles from parking on Jefferson Street.
The council vote wasn’t unanimous, with 3 voting against taking away parking.
