Future road projects are already being discussed by the Manitowoc Common Council.
During last week’s Committee of the Whole meeting, Engineering Division Manager Greg Minikel and Public Infrastructure Director Dan Koski explained what goes into deciding what street project to do next, which includes the last time work was done on the road and other costs like curb, gutter, and sewer line work.
Minkel explained to Seehafer News that the importance of a road project is based on the PASER system, with 10 meaning the road is new to a 1, meaning you’d probably have to close it.
He’s focusing on roads ranked between 4 and 2.
“That’s what we’re focusing on is those…that’s what’s been given to the committee of the whole to review is all those streets,” he explained. “But it’s a long list. There’s something like 111 segments of streets on that list so trying to prioritize what we do and when is certainly a challenge.”
Minikel explained that some future projects are on their radar and could include finishing Kellner Street or do work on Michigan Ave. to Indian Bluff.
Utilities can also play a part in deciding which streets to redo.
“If we know we got aging utilities, which is the case on certainly more of the inner type city or the downtown part of the city,” Minikel stated. “And so that in itself might prioritize a project too.”
Every alderman also recommended road projects to the Public Infrastructure Department that they would like to see done in their district.
Minikel says this conversation about roads will continue as they get closer to budget time.
The city approves its budget in November.
