It’s important to remember that while thunderstorms, to some are soothing, they are very dangerous.
Manitowoc County Emergency Services Director Rhonda Green said on the WCUB Breakfast Club that although rare, it is possible to be struck by lightning, especially if you’re outside.
Thunder is always the biggest sign a storm is coming, even if it seems far away.
“When you start to hear thunder, it’s time to stop what you’re doing outside and get indoors,” she explained.
While a lot of time, groups like farmers are affected by lightning when they are out in the field; boaters can be even more greatly affected because of being on the water.
If you see a storm coming, get out and get to cover.
However, Green says if you find yourself in a situation where you can’t get out of the water quickly enough:
“Anchor your boat for the storm,” she described.
“Get into the center of it (the boat), take all jewelry off, and lay as flat as possible. Don’t be the highest target.”
Lightning strikes didn’t kill anyone in Wisconsin last year, but 14 around the US died from being struck by lightning.
