Two Eastern Wisconsin legislators are calling into question Governor Tony Evers’ recent actions ahead of a local event.
In a joint statement, Assemblyman Shae Sortwell and Senator Andre Jacque say that Governor Evers was in the Town of Morrison, which is east of Wrightstown, to promote a program written by the legislature but only informed the representatives of the area an hour before the event.
They also claimed that the Town of Morrison was contacted the week prior to the event and were allegedly told to “not contact local state elected officials about the event.”
In the statement, Senator Jacque called the tactic “pathetic, but sadly not surprising”, pointing to an incident in 2020 where the governor’s office allegedly secretly recorded Republican legislative leadership during a meeting on how to handle the coronavirus.
He went on to say the governor has “now hit a new low today by gaslighting elected officials.”
Representative Sortwell echoed that sentiment, calling the move “par for the course.”
Sortwell continued, saying, “For years, he has given last-minute notice of his schedule in an attempt to prevent our attendance. Now we have evidence that he actually tells people not to inform their legislators of these events for ‘security reasons.’”
