A prominent player in the Democratic Party made a stop in Manitowoc Monday afternoon.
Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren spoke to voters at the Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, where she revealed Vice President Kamala Harris’ plan to lower Americans’ costs.
She specifically mentioned the need for affordable housing, and why cities are benefiting from the bipartisan infrastructure bill and finished talking about childcare.
“Think of it this way, we make a public investment right now in K-12,” she told those in attendance. “We are expecting the parents of a second grader to have to come up with enough money to cover the full cost of what it takes to put a building and a teacher and all the supplies. We say we all have an interest in getting that done.”
We were able to speak with the Senator ahead of her appearance, and she revealed that the main issue in this election, for her, is abortion.
“Today in America, nearly 40% of all women live in states in which they have effectively banned abortion,” she told Seehafer News.
“And that means that there are women in the middle of a miscarriage who can’t get the medical treatment they need because they’re not close enough to death.”
We also asked how the Democratic party felt about migrant workers, who are vital to the farming industry locally.
“We need comprehensive immigration reform because immigration is, as you rightly point out, deeply tied into our economy.”
Senator Warren elaborated on what that reform would look like, saying “We need the money for security at the border. We need money for the states that are housing migrants. We need work permits so that people who are here can do the work they want to do, and people who want to employ them legally can do exactly that.”
Voters on both sides of the political aisle have voiced issues with Vice President Harris getting the nomination despite not being on any primary ballot.
Sen. Warren said that she may not have been on primary ballots, but she was elected.
“80 million people voted for her to be there in 2020 if, for any reason, Joe Biden needed to step aside that she would be the one who stepped up. And that’s exactly what happened here.”
The stop in Manitowoc was one of six scheduled for the area this week.
She also visited Grafton and Door County on Monday and plans to visit Green Bay, Appleton, and Oshkosh throughout the day on Tuesday.
