Non-native Phragmites are invasive plant species that continue to harm ecosystems across Wisconsin.
Phragmites are a perennial wetland grass that grows anywhere from three to twenty feet tall which creates dense clones.
These invasive plants can quickly take over ecosystems and pose a threat to overtake any habitat in which they are found.
Manitowoc County Agricultural Educator Angie Ulness spoke with Seehafer News and described the threat Phragmites pose.
“It’s very important to control them to curve the negative effects on biodiversity,” she explained.“Try to prevent invading of habitats and minimize loss of recreational use of wetlands, shores, and waterways.”
Phragmites are resilient plants that can withstand a plethora of rough conditions. It is also quite possible that you may have them on your property.
On this note, Ulness said, “If you have Phragmites on your property, your participation in the program is critical to its success.”
This program will allow for specialists to apply herbicide to remove the invasive species for good.
If you believe you have Phragmites on your property or know where they are located, you can contact the land and water conservation department or Melissa Curran with Stantec at 920-841-1072.
