Plymouth Police are warning residents of a recent extortion scam making its way through the area.
Officers say the scammer indicates that you have installed malware or spyware on your computer and have been keeping track of what a victim has been searching for online and the videos that they’ve watched.
Another variation the scammer might send is that they’ve spied through the webcam on someone’s computer.
A QR code is then sent to a person requesting payment through Bitcoin, or the list of websites the victim allegedly visited will be sent to others the victim knows.
Plymouth Police continue saying the scam seems real because the message will have the victim’s actual name, address, and a Google Streetview photo of their house.
If you do receive something like this, just delete it and block the sender.
Other fake scams have been making their way around Manitowoc, Brown, and Door Counties for the last few months.
