Federal money will be used for making forests better throughout Wisconsin, including in Sheboygan.
An announcement from Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers explains that the Wisconsin DNR is giving Urban Forestry Grants, which got funding through the Inflation Reduction Act.
The funds will go toward work such as removing hazardous trees, increasing the forest canopy through planting, supporting urban forestry workforce development, and using trees to reduce urban heat.
In Sheboygan, about $174,600 will be used for reforestation and retention of trees in the city to improve air quality.
Evers says of the grants, “Thanks to our local and federal partners, these investments help build a stronger, more resilient forestry industry and will protect our environment and grow our economy for generations to come.”
Other federal dollars will go to communities like the city of Rhinelander, Stevens Point, and Eau Claire.
The grants will also go toward several nonprofits like Urban Tree Alliance and Operation Fresh Start.
