In a couple of weeks, high school students around Manitowoc and Calumet Counties will return to the Reality Store.
It’s not a real place, but an event through the Chamber Manitowoc County to help teach students about financial literacy.
Chamber Executive Director Abby Quistorf explained to Seehafer News that the event helps students examine the future and career expectations, but it also teaches students how one thing affects another decision.
“Generally, it’s juniors and seniors. That is the core age group that’s going to be going out into the real world soon,” she said. “So, we want to give them the tools and skill sets to be able to succeed.”
Students will begin by having a checkbook register with a career path and salary they want to take, but before they start living life, they must pay up, metaphorically.
“The first step they have to do is go visit Uncle Sam to pay their taxes,” Quistorf stated. “Then they have to go the bank credit union to pay their student loans back.”
Following that, they will go to other booths to make payments for a house, cars, or other needs.
The first stop for the Reality Store is at Kiel High School on Friday, October 4th.
Other schools that the Reality Store will stop at include Manitowoc Lincoln, Roncalli, and Reedsville High School.
The Chamber will also stop at Brillion High School next month. Volunteers are still needed for the event.
