Scams involving area law enforcement agencies continue to spread and scammers have added a new layer to their efforts.
As of Wednesday (September 19th), the Fond du Lac Police Department has confirmed they have been impersonated by scammers using their phone number and posing as Sargent Johnson.
The new twist in the scam is asking victims for a DNA sample as there is a fake warrant out for their arrest.
The caller also has a strong knowledge of DNA submissions, making the claim quite believable.
New scams of a similar nature have popped up involving the Manitowoc Police Department and Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.
Scammers are posing as Captain of Field Services Todd Christie and the newest scams also involve the request of large sums of money, often via Bitcoin.
As is the case with all of these recent scams, law enforcement will never call requesting DNA samples or Bitcoin payments.
Fond du Lac PD and Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office ask citizens to report any such calls if received.
