Manitowoc County is no different when it comes to seeing increases in Pertussis, better known as Whooping Cough.
Manitowoc County Health Department Nurse Manager Heather Feest explains to Seehafer News that there have been 10 cases of Whooping Cough as of September 19th.
While it might not seem like much, the health department calls it a significant increase from 2023 and prior years.
Feest continues explaining that before 2019, the county consistently averaged a few cases a year from 2020 to 2023.
There were also years where zero cases were reported, which is why they are experiencing a high year.
Pertussis is caused by bacteria spreading through the air.
It starts as a normal cough but can turn into violent coughing fits that can last for days.
Feest reminds residents that it’s important to vaccinate their children, especially babies, who are the most susceptible to Pertussis.
