The Wisconsin DNR wants hunters to get their deer tested for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).
CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects the nervous system of deer, elk, moose, and caribou.
For the fall 2024-25 hunting season, the DNR is especially interested in getting more samples in what are called Fall Priority Areas, meaning areas were sampling is needed or from areas where a deer with CWD was detected.
One of the areas in Sheboygan County.
There are three places to get a deer test including Weyker Outdoors LLC in Random Lake, Farmstead Outdoors in Sheboygan, and the DNR Plymouth Service Center.
Hunters in Manitowoc County can get their deer tested at the Mishicot DNR Station.
If you get a deer that tests positive for CWD, a replacement authorization will be issued the hunter’s account within two to four days.
A CWD positive deer should also be properly disposed in carcass disposal dumpsters, landfills, or other stations.
Hunters can stay alert for deer with Chronic Wasting Disease because a deer will have symptoms including drastic weight loss, drooped head and ears, loss of coordination, excessive salivation and reduced fear of humans.
