The man running to try and unseat Senator Tammy Baldwin sat down with a prominent conservative figure last night.
Republican candidate Eric Hovde had an hour-long fireside chat with the Dailywire’s Ben Shapiro at the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake.
Shapiro explained to a crowd that he has been touring across the United States to stump for conservatives to get into Congress because of the razor-thin margin in the U.S. Senate.
Shapiro explained why he believes Hovde needs to win Wisconsin.
“If Democrats were to take, unfortunately, the presidency, the Senate, and the House, they would then try to restructure nearly every rule in American public life just to make it impossible for conservatives ever to win power again on the federal level,” Shapiro said. “It’s important that Hovde be the senator for next six, twelve, eighteen years.”
Numerous topics were discussed, but it started with a topic of inflation.
Hovde says Americans have felt that we’ve been in a recession for the last four years and because of Democrats, everyone is feeling it.
“They’ve created more wealth inequality,” he described. “They’ve hammered everyday Americans. The working class, the middle class, the elderly, who are living on fixed incomes. And they’ve created all this inflation with all their spending. So, they own it. It’s amazing how the press tries to cover for them.”
Speaking of the press, Shapiro and Hovde also discussed the role of the media and how, to them, it favors Democrats.
Hovde told the crowd that big media groups are purposely making up lies against him which have been used in ads on TV, a point he’s made before in previous rallies.
The duo also discussed Title IX regulations, which both Hovde and Shapiro say they are vehemently against.
The Republican candidate explained what he would want to do about it.
“We know how to educate our kids in our local community,” he stated. “But they created this thing called the (US) Department of Education, one of the worst monstrosities that’s ever been created. So, I’m just so fundamentally opposed at this, if I get to the US Senate, one thing I’m going to say is hey, there’s a spot to save a lot of money and do America a lot better, closing that thing for good.”
Shapiro finished off the night asking why Hovde wants to run for Senate.
The Republican businessman put it simply.
“I know it’s going to sound corny, but I’m old fashioned, I love my country,” he said to roaring applause. “I was raised very patriotically. We cannot lose this country. If we lose this country world is destined to a very long dark period.”
The race for the Wisconsin Senate seat is close one.
The most recent Marquette Law School Poll shows Tammy Baldwin with a slight lead over Hovde in Wisconsin.
This is the closest Hovde has been to the Manitowoc County area.
He first stopped in Two Rivers during an RV tour in July.
