The city of Two Rivers could be doing more with their vegetable gardening program.
The city council last night approved sending a resolution to the Two Rivers Plan Commission to turn the program in the trial stages into an ordinance that would allow residents to grow their own food without worry of it being illegal.
Councilwoman Darla LeClair has been at the forefront of this, and she says the program has been pretty successful.
“I’ve been in close contact with everyone who has participated,” she told the council. “I’ve gotten a lot of really nice feedback that we can take into consideration for how we can tweak this further.”
She says now she hopes that the plan commission will approve it so the council can make it an ordinance.
She says the rules of the program are good.
“I don’t think they’re too strict; they make sense,” she explained.“It’s something that the city government is willing to accept. At least they have for two years.”
Six people have since taken advantage of the program since the pilot started.
There has been some pushback from city residence. LeClair says they’re worried about plants like corn being grown, which is not allowed.
If this passes Two Rivers would be the first city to have an ordinance like this in the county.
The pilot vegetable garden program started in 2023.
