A Wisconsin coalition created to protect the state’s lakes is gaining substantial traction.
This coalition is made up of fishing experts, lake property owners, sailors, and many others who care about protecting Wisconsin lakes from wake-enhanced boating.
Wake-enhanced boating is known to spread invasive species, erode shorelines, and damage aquatic vegetation.
Understanding the harmful aspects of wake boats, over 200 Wisconsin Lakes and 33 towns have taken action to do their part in protecting the state’s waterways.
A founding coalition member, The Last Wilderness Alliance, has been assisting local municipalities to develop local ordinances regulating wake-enhanced boating.
Many Wisconsinites share the sentiments of the coalition with 75 percent of those asked at the spring Wisconsin Conservation Congress agreeing that wake boat regulations are needed.
Joe Garstecki, of coalition member Lakes at Stake Wisconsin says, “Until elected and appointed state officials take action against the damage to Wisconsin lakes and waterways by these boats, we will need to continue to fight in every town and for every lake.”
