The two candidates vying for Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional seat are both set on what they want if they are elected.
Republican Glenn Grothman and Democrat John Zarbano both debated for the second Seehafernews.com debate held yesterday afternoon (October 16th).
Topics included issues like immigration, DEI, and helping veterans.
One of the first topics was about the economy and what the US can do to lower its debt.
Grothman said there is too much spending going on and too many things the federal government shouldn’t be dealing with.
“We have to, beginning in the next budget, begin to look and cut back on those programs, with the exception of Social Security, which I feel should stay the way it is, and I’ve been very adamant about that,” Grothman stated.
Social Security was one of the topics both candidates agreed on.
Zarbano spoke differently about what should be done about the nation’s debt, saying it can’t be grown, cut, or taxed without balance.
He talked about tax cuts imposed by the Trump Administration.
Zarbano said in his statement, “In 2025, that will be the first thing that we will be looking at and adjusting those to better fit our debt ceiling and to fund the necessary government programs.”
The debate would move to immigration, a topic that Grothman has been very vocal about and called one of the most important issues for voters.
Zarbano explained that if elected, he would reintroduce the Border Act of 2024 in Congress.
“It tackled the southern border with dignity and due process,” he explained. “It terminated Catch and Release. It quickly, rapidly adjudicated migrant’s claims for asylum. It massively increased border hiring. And it instituted more strict asylum screening.”
Grothman said the bill wouldn’t get support from Republicans.
“It still allows such a huge number of people to cross the southern border,” he described. “No longer illegally, but legally. But nevertheless, we’re already at record highs in the number of people who are sworn in every year legally in this country.”
Both candidates were also asked about the November 5th election and if they believe the election results will be accurate.
Grothman said we made it through last year, and he was one person who certified the results, but he’s concerned about something else: absentee ballots.
“Regardless of how good the poll workers are, you never know for sure who filled it out, and you don’t know if someone was coaching that person,” he stated. “I fought years ago in the state legislature to prevent the vast expansion of absentee ballots for that reason. I wish we’d go back to the day in which to get an absentee ballot, you had to have a reason to get that ballot.”
Zarbano explained his time as a poll worker.
“I know from personal experience what has to happen with safeguards and what training to ensure that we have free and fair elections,” Zarbano explained.
