Employees at local businesses are making sure that anyone buying tobacco is legally allowed to.
Manitowoc Police Chief Nick Reimer explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that there were no violations after compliance checks were done through Healthiest Manitowoc County at Manitowoc businesses.
Reimer says it’s the second time in a row.
“Local tobacco outlets and people that sell tobacco and nicotine are doing a good job of not selling to people under 18, and that’s really important,” Reimer explained.
The compliance checks happen with volunteers who are underage going into businesses that sell tobacco.
Reimer says if a business would have sold them a tobacco product, they would have either faced a fine or other action.
He continues saying, “Sometimes if it’s a fire offense, maybe they’ll get away with a warning and maybe some educational training to make sure they understand how important it is.”
Healthiest Manitowoc County does the compliance checks through the Wisconsin Wins campaign that helps decrease youth access to tobacco products in Wisconsin.
