Senior Zylia Kleinfeldt and Junior Taylor Peterson of Manitowoc Lincoln, along with senior Madison Lamers and her sister Megan Lamers of Roncalli/Two Rivers, have been eliminated from Madison’s WIAA State Girls Individual Tennis Tournament.
The talented Ships duo ran into a buzzsaw Friday morning, losing to seniors Aubrey Jayne and Mia Darr of the University School of Milwaukee 6-0, 6-1 in the second round of The Division One Doubles bracket. Ships Head Coach Stephanie Henschel tells Seehafer Sports that the score did not indicate the match’s competitiveness.
“They won a lot of games where it was close. We would get close with several deuces but couldn’t get over the hump. I’m proud of them for the way they competed.”
Zylia and Taylor finished their season with a record of 24 and 5.
The Lamers sisters also lost to a seeded team from Arrowhead as seniors Jacquelyn Cox and Lily Schulz posted a 6-1.6-4 victory.
Their coach, Kristin Lamers, says her daughters gave it their all.
“I’m super proud of them. They started a little slow in the first set, and I told them we had to return to playing our game.” Lamers adds—
“They were coming to the net, and we needed to lob it over them to get back into the match. They dug deep and kept it going. They fought back hard in the second set and played hard. They gave it everything they had and left everything on the court.”
Madison and Megan finished their season with a record of 19 and 7.
Lincoln Junior Jordin Popp lost her opening-round match in Division One singles Thursday, finishing her season with a record of 21 and 7.
All five players, along with coaches and teammates, will be guests on WOMT Sports Talk Monday night.
The show airs from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. from Salute to Everyone at 1107 South 10th Street in Manitowoc.
