The Green Bay Packers snuck out a win over the Houston Texans 24-22 at Lambeau Field thanks to a last second field goal from newly acquired kicker, Brandon McManus.
Jordan Love was good, not great on the day, completing 24 of his 33 attempts for 220 yards and had three touchdown passes, however, he also threw two interceptions.
On the ground, the Texans bottled up Green Bay’s five rushers, with a 27 yard rush from Josh Jacobs inflating the total rushing yard to 82 on the day.
Right Guard Sean Rhyan told Seehafer News that he is happy they won, “If you look at it under a microscope, we could have played a whole lot better. Not even made it close. We are going to come in, look, at it, get better, and…roll on to next week.”
Center Josh Meyers agreed, pointing to one big reason for the “off week” for his squad.
He told us, “We played well most of the game…but it felt like we needed to do a bit of a better job playing more consistently throughout.”
However, the Packers’ defense also had a phenomenal day, holding all start QB CJ Stroud to only 86 yards through the air.
Joe Mixon did have a big day on the ground, gouging the Packers for 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Safety Xavier McKinney praised the entire squad for their performance against a powerful Texans offense.
“We’ve got playmakers everywhere,” he told us. “We’ve got playmakers on the d-line, we’ve got playmakers on the second level, and we’ve got playmakers on the back end.”
A total of 14 defenders made tackles for the Pack, which fellow safety Evan Willaims says is a testament to the depth they have, saying they have “people at every position that are playmakers, hunting the ball.”
Head Coach Matt LaFleur also praised the defense, which he said played complementary football.
“Our defense played outstanding,” he said bluntly. “That’s a really good offensive football team…To hold a good team like that to 22 points, considering a couple of those drives started deep in our own territory…we gave (Coach Jeff) Hafley a game ball for the defensive performance.”
On special teams, Punter Daniel Whelan was very reliable, averaging 56 yards per punt, and had three consecutive punts of over 60 yards, and a longest of the day being 66 yards.
We asked LaFleur if Whelan is best punters in the league.
“It sure seams like it,” he responded. “He is definitely the best I have ever been around.”
Up next for the Packers is a road contest in Jacksonville, as they take on the Jaguars. They are coming off of a 32-16 win over the Patriots in London.
