The two charged in the death of 3-year-old Elijah Vue are getting different hearings.
39-year-old Jesse Vang, Elijah’s guardian, and 31-year-old Katrina Baur, Elijah’s mother, were both in a Manitowoc County Courtroom over Zoom for their initial appearances after new charges were filed against both last week (October 18th).
Baur’s Attorney Amber Gratz asked Judge Anthoney Lambrecht to waive her preliminary hearing, which was granted.
Lambrecht asked if Baur knew what was going on to which she said “yes.”
Public Defender Luke Harrison told Judge Lambrecht that Vang is still looking for an attorney and asked that he have a preliminary hearing.
Vang’s preliminary hearing is set for October 24th while Baur will be back in court on October 30th.
New bonds were given to both Baur and Vang following new charges filed against them in Elijah’s death. Vang has a half a million-dollar cash bond on charges of physical assault of a child causing death, hiding a corpse, and resisting or obstructing police.
Baur faces charges of chronic child neglect, consequence is death, neglecting a child, and two counts of resisting or obstructing an officer.
Elijah’s remains were found in the Town of Two Rivers last month.
A criminal complaint alleges that Vang kept Elijah from going home as part of correcting his “bad behavior.”
A forensic scientist said his manner of death was caused by both physical and mental torture.
Elijah’s death is being ruled as a “homicide by unspecified means.”
