The City of Sheboygan has officially adopted the waterfront and marina master plan despite pushback from some Common Council members.
The master plan was brought before the council by the Public Works Committee during Monday’s (October 21st) meeting which passed in a 5-2 vote.
Some considered the $77 million master plan a necessary game plan for the area, while others felt the price was just too high.
In favor of the master plan, City Administrator Casey Bradley said, “We do ultimately need a master plan of conceptually how we want the riverfront to or the lakefront to look. Because without that, we won’t be able to go after state funding or federal grants or even private grants.”
However, Alder Joseph Heidemann disagreed, saying, “$77 million is a non-starter. We have to determine as a council and a city what we want down there and how much we want to spend on the marina itself.”
The inception of this plan began when aging infrastructure at the marina played a large role in substantial yearly losses.
Sheboygan, along with the SmithGroup, developed the master plan to lay the framework for what ends up happening on the city’s lakefront.
City Council President Dean Dekker also said while not everything in the master plan will come to fruition, the plan itself is a necessity to move forward in improving the lakefront.
