The deadline to purchase sturgeon spearing season is now just a week away.
The deadline to go sturgeon spearing in 2025 falls on Halloween, October 31st next week.
There is an unlimited number of sturgeon spearing licenses available for Lake Winnebago for Wisconsin residents and non-residents, however license holders must be at least 12 years of age.
Military personnel home on leave during the spearing season and those who will turn 12 between November 1st and the final day of the season are not required to purchase a license prior to the deadline next week.
The Upriver Lakes Fishery, which includes Poygan, Butte de Morts, and Winneconne Lakes, is managed by a point system and lottery that is limited to 500 permitted persons, but these 500 recipients will not be allowed to purchase licenses for Lake Winnebago.
Proceeds from the purchase of sturgeon spearing licenses help fund various sturgeon management activities within the Winnebago system.
The season opens on February 8th and will run for a maximum of 16 days.
Licenses can be purchased online at gowild.wi.gov.
