The city of Manitowoc will continue to make fixes at the former Newton Gravel Pit.
The common council approved an intergovernmental agreement to move forward with constructing a new water main in the townships of Manitowoc and Newton to help provide clean drinking water to residents impacted by the pollution.
According to the city’s website, dumping of chlorinated solvents was done at the Gravel Pit which caused the release of contaminants to soil and groundwater in the environment.
Water tests were done on wells located on Hecker Road and Silver Creek Road, and chloride concentrations were higher than DNR drinking water standards.
According to city documents from Attorney Eric Nycz, Manitowoc Township Chairman Jeffery Blahnik noted that there will be requesting of a couple of changes for transparency.
It’s not known when the project will get started.
