The Manitowoc Warming Shelter is getting ready to open for its 3rd season.
The shelter will open on Wednesday, November 13th.
Pastor Matt Sauer explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest Program that they are looking for volunteers to help for the 150 days that they run in the basement of First Presbyterian Church.
A lot of people dedicated their time last year, with Sauer noting, “We had over 200 separate volunteers (and) just under 8,000 volunteer hours in those 150 days.”
Before opening day, Sauer says there will be an orientation this Saturday at First Presbyterian from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. to explain what to do if you want to volunteer at the warming shelter.
“Whether you’re a returning volunteer or you’re just thinking about this might be something to do,” Saur said. “We kind of walk through what is some of the basic flow, what are some of the policies. And then you’ll have the opportunity to talk to other volunteers that are there and to literally sign up right on the spot.”
The doors open around 6:00 or 6:30 p.m., depending on the night, and can welcome about twelve people a night.
They’ve had to turn people away, but they will allow people to come in for dinner and can help by giving kits to some if available.
Sauer says the shelter will be using a lottery system again to allow people in.
