A local state representative is explaining what’s happening when voters vote on a state amendment to the Wisconsin Constitution.
Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that the amendment is simple.
He said the amendment “Clarifies the (Wisconsin) Constitution that only U.S. citizens can vote in our elections.”
LeMahieu says he understands that referendums are confusing because they’re written through nonpartisan attorneys from the Legislative Reference Bureau, which uses a lot of legal speech.
He says he got a call from a couple who voted on the amendment, not knowing if they voted the way they wanted to.
While LeMahieu says the referendum is simple, groups like the League of Women Voters say people should vote no, saying it’s an attack on the freedom to vote.
In-person early voting ends at the end of this week in Manitowoc County.
