Wisconsin’s Senate Majority Leader wants to accomplish one thing that didn’t get done last year with the state’s budget surplus.
9th District State Senator Devin LeMahieu said on WOMT’s Be My Guest Program that he would like to try to get some money back to the taxpayers.
Last year, the state finished with a $7 million surplus, but it’s expected to finish around $3.5 million this year.
LeMahieu says some of the money was invested into road projects, but some of it was supposed to be used for tax cuts. But:
“We tried to give that money back to the taxpayers two different times with different packages of bills that we put on his (Evers) desk,” he said. “He vetoes everything except the Childcare Tax Credit.”
He’s talking about Governor Tony Evers. Nevertheless, LeMahieu wants to make this one of his goals in the next legislative session.
“Because if we’re running surpluses, that means we’re taxing too much, and we need to give it back,” He stated.
According to the Associated Press, Evers didn’t sign the bills because he was concerned about draining the state’s reserves and putting the state at risk of returning to federal stimulus money.
The legislative session gets underway in January.
