Wisconsin residents can get their own tree for the holidays if they go to certain areas.
The Wisconsin DNR announced that if a resident has a permit for a personal-use holiday tree, they will be allowed to cut a tree down at the Brule, Flambeau, and Governor Earl Peshtigo Rivers as well as Governor Knowles and Northern Highland-American Legion State Forests.
Holiday tree cutting is not allowed anywhere else.
The price for a permit and tree may vary slightly from property to property, but the average is about $5 a tree.
Wisconsin DNR Land Specialist Teague Prichard says, “We know people enjoy our northern state forests throughout the year, and the opportunity to find that special holiday tree or bring home some fresh-scented evergreen boughs provides another great reason to visit these properties.”
The DNR also explains that harvesting is prohibited within 100 feet or visual distance of roads, trails, and water before anyone goes and chops down a tree.
Holiday trees must also be cut down to ground level with a maximum height of 30 feet and can’t be resold.
