In the wake of the recent network breach, the City of Sheboygan is looking to upgrade its cybersecurity.
The Sheboygan Common Council is set to discuss a possible increase in cybersecurity funding tonight (December 2nd).
This would see nearly half a million dollars put towards the city’s IT department.
$401,286 would be moved from Sheboygan’s Transit System Budget and put towards new IT equipment.
An additional $60,000 would be taken from the Riverfront Parking Master Plan to make hardware and software upgrades to its cybersecurity efforts.
Following the council’s discussion, the matter will be referred to the Finance and Personnel Committee for review.
These discussions are taking place as a ransomware entity, known as Chort, is in possession of 200 gigabytes of the City’s data after hackers breached their network.
Currently, they are working with experts to assess the situation and restore full functionality to their network.
