Authorities in Brown County are warning residents of two scams currently on the rise.
The Brown County Sheriff’s Office has alerted the community that pig butchering and romance scams have recently targeted unsuspecting victims.
A pig butchering scam involves cybercriminals building trust over time through social media, messaging apps, or online forums.
Law enforcement has called this the “fattening up” phase of the scammer’s effort.
After the trust is built, the scammers persuade an individual to invest in fake or manipulated cryptocurrency platforms before draining the funds.
Romance scams are more self-explanatory in that they have scammers pose as potential romantic partners on dating apps or social media.
Scammers will attempt to groom their victims emotionally prior to requesting or convincing a victim to pay them money.
After receiving payment, a scammer will disappear, leaving the victim hurt financially and emotionally.
