The City of Manitowoc is considering possibly eliminating some concrete islands on the city’s north side.
The Public Infrastructure Committee met Wednesday (December 4th) to discuss eliminating the islands on Fleetwood Drive from Waldo Boulevard to Stokes Lane.
According to city documents, Engineering Department Manager Greg Minikel explained the project’s several positives and some negatives.
Some positives include providing unhindered access to 11 driveways in the area since nine are blocked or impacted by the concrete islands.
Another would help the city save between $100,000 to $120,000 by eliminating curbs.
Some negatives Minkel mentioned included more lawn space for residents to cut since the city could expand the curb, and some driveway approaches would be six feet longer.
10th District Alderman Todd Reckelburg explained to Minkel in an email that some residents on Fleetwood Drive would be concerned about drivers speeding because the concrete islands are removed and suggested extra signage or a path for pedestrians.
Redoing the street is part of the city’s new 6-year $34 million road plan as part of the 2025 city budget.
